Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has reaffirmed the government’s focus on strengthening Kenya’s energy infrastructure and petroleum value chains as the country prepares for the groundbreaking of the East African Oil Refinery at Lamu Port.

As part of his official engagements at the Coast, CS Wandayi paid a courtesy call on Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto ahead of the planned groundbreaking ceremony, which is expected to be presided over by President William Ruto.

Wandayi said the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is working to align energy infrastructure, petroleum value chains and strategic ports as part of efforts to enhance energy security, attract investment and create employment opportunities.

He further highlighted the strategic importance of Lamu Port, noting that the facility will play a central role in supporting the proposed refinery and the wider LAPSSET Corridor.

According to the CS, the development is expected to unlock opportunities in logistics, trade, local enterprise and investment, while strengthening the Coast’s position within Kenya’s broader energy and economic infrastructure network.

The planned refinery project and associated infrastructure are therefore being positioned as part of wider efforts to expand Kenya’s energy capabilities and leverage strategic transport corridors to support economic growth.
