President William Ruto has disbursed approximately KSh250 million to more than 9,500 young entrepreneurs across six North Rift counties under the Nyota Business Start Up Capital programme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment and poverty.

The beneficiaries, drawn from Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Turkana and West Pokot counties, each received KSh22,000 to support and expand their small businesses. In addition, the government deposited KSh3,000 into each beneficiary’s savings account at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to promote a culture of saving and financial security among young entrepreneurs.

Speaking during the disbursement ceremony in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, President Ruto said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower youth economically and equip them with practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond startup financing, the President announced that 20,000 young people will benefit from the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) component of the Nyota programme. Under this initiative, the government will fully fund a certification course lasting up to one month, enabling skilled youth to gain formal recognition and transition smoothly into employment.

The government will also support an additional 90,000 young people through on-the-job training, where participants will be attached to experienced master craftsmen and women for hands-on skills transfer. Each trainee will receive a monthly stipend of KSh6,000 for six months, while the government covers certification costs and compensates the master trainers.

To further enhance inclusion in economic opportunities, President Ruto revealed plans to train 600,000 young people, women, and persons with disabilities to access the 30 per cent of government procurement opportunities reserved for special interest groups.

The President noted that these initiatives, alongside labour mobility programmes, affordable housing projects, market and hostel development, and the expansion of digital jobs, form a comprehensive approach to addressing unemployment and eradicating poverty across the country.

“This is how we build an inclusive economy—by investing in our people, especially the youth, and giving them the tools to succeed,” President Ruto said.
