The Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, has reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to supporting Meru County’s efforts to expand its energy capacity through strategic partnerships with private investors. Speaking after holding consultative talks with Meru County Governor H.E. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia, CS Wandayi said the meeting focused on reviewing the county’s energy development plans and exploring opportunities to strengthen electricity generation within the region. Governor M’Ethingia led a county delegation in the discussions, which emphasized Meru’s ambition to positively engage Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as part of a broader strategy to boost local and national energy supply. The proposed initiatives are expected to contribute to enhancing Kenya’s overall installed electricity production capacity. CS Wandayi assured the Meru County leadership of the Ministry of Energy’s full cooperation and technical support as the county advances its investment-driven energy agenda. He noted that collaboration between national and county governments is critical in attracting private sector participation and accelerating sustainable energy development. The engagement underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to promote decentralized energy planning, encourage private investment in the power sector, and ensure reliable electricity supply to support economic growth at both county and national levels.
