The Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, today appeared before a Joint Sitting of the Senate and National Assembly Energy Committees to appraise Members of Parliament on the Government of Kenya’s Field Development Plan (FDP) for oil production in the South Lokichar Basin, Turkana County. The high-level engagement focused on outlining the technical, economic, and policy framework guiding the planned oil production, as the country moves closer to realizing its petroleum potential. CS Wandayi provided a comprehensive overview of the proposed development plan, highlighting its alignment with national energy goals, economic growth strategies, and sustainable resource management principles. During the session, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized the importance of transparency, environmental stewardship, and community inclusion in the implementation of the project. He noted that the Field Development Plan seeks to balance commercial viability with the socio-economic interests of the people of Turkana County and the wider nation. The briefing comes ahead of a crucial parliamentary public participation process, which is set to commence tomorrow. CS Wandayi underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens, especially host communities, are fully engaged and their views considered before the final approval and rollout of the project. Members of the Joint Committees welcomed the update and engaged the Cabinet Secretary on key issues including revenue sharing, infrastructure development, environmental safeguards, and local content participation. The South Lokichar oil project is viewed as a strategic national initiative with the potential to enhance energy security, create jobs, and generate significant revenue for Kenya. As Parliament prepares to lead the public participation process, the government has reiterated its readiness to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the project delivers inclusive and sustainable benefits for the country.
