Siaya County Celebrates Rare Medical Breakthrough at Bondo Sub County Hospital

Siaya County is celebrating a remarkable medical achievement after a team of healthcare professionals at Bondo Sub County Hospital successfully managed and delivered a baby from a rare and life-threatening abdominal ectopic pregnancy.

The mother, Mama Nancy Akinyi, and her baby girl, Blessing Violet, have both been safely discharged after receiving specialized care for three months in the hospital’s Newborn Baby Unit (NBU). The baby, who weighed just 1 kilogram at birth, is now healthy and thriving — a development county officials have described as nothing short of miraculous.

Abdominal ectopic pregnancies are extremely rare and highly dangerous conditions in which a fetus develops outside the uterus, posing serious risks to both mother and child. The successful management of the case highlights the growing capacity and expertise within Siaya County’s healthcare system.

County leaders praised the medical team led by Dr. Evans Ogoti, alongside dedicated nurses, Community Health Promoters (CHPs), and the theatre and NBU teams for their professionalism, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to saving lives.

“This remarkable success is a true testament to what clinical excellence, teamwork, and compassion can achieve,” the county government stated.

The county also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening healthcare services across the region. As part of ongoing investments in the health sector, Siaya County is constructing an ultra-modern theatre complex integrated with a Newborn Baby Unit, as well as a new inpatient complex at Bondo Hospital.

In addition, the county plans to recruit more doctors, nurses, and clinical officers by July in a bid to further improve healthcare delivery and increase access to quality medical services for residents.

These deliberate investments and reforms are already bearing fruit. Siaya County is currently ranked ninth among Kenya’s 47 counties in reducing maternal mortality — a milestone county leaders say reflects their dedication to protecting mothers and newborns.

“No mother should lose her life while bringing forth new life, and we will not relent in this mission,” the county government affirmed.

The successful delivery of Blessing Violet now stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative impact of quality healthcare in Siaya County.
