Youth advocate Dan Nyibule has urged young people to embrace digital platforms and actively participate in leadership, saying technology offers unprecedented opportunities to influence public policy and drive sustainable development. Nyibule made the remarks during the 8th Southern African Youth Forum in South Africa, convened under the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The three-day forum brought together young leaders, policymakers, and development partners to discuss food security, climate action, water resilience, sustainable agriculture, and youth empowerment. He emphasized that young people should not be viewed merely as beneficiaries of development programmes but as key partners in shaping policies and implementing solutions. Meaningful youth participation, he noted, must go beyond symbolic representation and translate into real influence in governance and decision-making. Nyibule also highlighted the internet as a powerful tool for civic engagement, urging young people to use digital platforms responsibly to promote informed discussions, combat misinformation, and advocate for community issues. He called on governments, development partners, and the private sector to bridge the digital divide by expanding access to affordable internet, digital devices, and digital literacy, particularly in underserved communities. According to Nyibule, Kenya’s youthful population has the potential to transform the country’s political, economic, and social landscape if given genuine opportunities to participate beyond election periods. He urged institutions to create inclusive spaces where young voices can shape policies and contribute to national and regional development. “The future of Kenya and Africa depends on empowering young people to lead, innovate, and actively participate in decisions that affect their lives,” he said.
